SEER Ratings Explained

You might be thinking, “I know I need a new air conditioning unit, but I don’t know which one to get.” One of the factors you should consider is the SEER rating. Below, we’ll explain what the SEER Rating is and why it’s helpful when choosing an air conditioner.

Summer approaches and so does the need for an efficient AC unit

The SEER Rating lets you know how efficient the air conditioner is.

SEER is an acronym that stands for “Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio.” The SEER rating is a measure of how much cool air the unit outputs, divided by the energy it consumes. Of course, this calculation is an average, so the SEER Rating gives a general, not an exact, estimate of efficiency. The unit may perform better or worse in different environments or temperatures, but the SEER Rating is a good way to estimate how well one unit may perform compared to another.

SEER Rating Requirements have changed.

Today’s air conditioning unit SEER Ratings range from a minimum rating of 13 (14 in some areas) to a maximum of 25. The higher the SEER rating, the more efficient the unit is. However, you don’t have to break the bank trying to buy the highest-rated AC unit available to lower your energy bills. Legislation requires newly installed air conditioners to have at least a 13 SEER rating. If you have an older system, the SEER rating of your air conditioner may be as low as 8. Don’t worry—you aren’t breaking the law! But you might be breaking the bank.

You can save more money with a high-SEER unit.

If your air conditioning unit is an 8 or 9, upgrading to even the lowest rated unit available today will save money annually on energy costs by at least twenty percent. Once again this is an average, but you will notice a difference in value if you upgrade to a unit that is rated much higher. If you are upgrading from a 14 to a 15, your savings won’t be as drastic, but you will be using a more efficient unit to cool your home or business place.

A higher SEER Rating usually means a higher price. But here’s the deal:
